The Chargers concluded their preseason on Thursday in a loss to the Rams.
The Bolts finished the preseason 1-2 after dropping two straight games to their in-state rivals. Now, though, the preseason is in the rearview mirror with the regular season on the horizon.
There is a ton that will happen from now to then with the 53-man roster cuts on August 30; however, the Chargers may have bigger problems on their hands regarding special teams.
If there is one area of concern for the Chargers heading into the season (outside of offense or defense), it is by far special teams. Their loss to the Rams only amplified those worries, with Cameron Dicker missing yet another field goal attempt and the punting unit not as sharp as they should be.
Punter JK Scott
had a rough night. He recorded two short punts of 20 and 33 yards while also handling kick off duties after Dicker appeared to tweak something.
Scott's perofrmance has been shaky. Last week, the punter had an ugly 83-yard punt-return touchdown against the 49ers in whcih he did his best matador impression.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh said Scott needed to have a plan to make the tackle.
Dicker, on the other hand, has missed a total of three kicks during the preseason, consisting of one field goal and two extra points.
Special teams may not win you many games, but it can certainly lose them. The last thing the Chargers need is for that unit to become their weakest link, especially with a deep playoff run within reach.
