The NFL trade deadline is a little over a month away, and the Chargers could be one of the teams to watch.
Los Angeles is off to a 0-4 start after a sluggish opening month, and things haven't gone as planned. If the Chargers can't turn things around, they could shift their focus toward the future.
Moe Moton of Bleacher Reportlisted nine surprise teams thus far this season as 'buyers' or 'sellers' and tagged the Chargers as the latter.
"The Chargers may have to rebuild their defense next year. That unit doesn't look the same after former defensive coordinator Jesse Minter left to become the Baltimore Ravens head coach. His replacement, Chris O'Leary, will have his work cut out for him if he keeps the job."
The Chargers have some stellar pieces on
both sides of the ball, but especially on defense.
Edge rusher Khalil Mack and safety Derwin James Jr. are among the names that the Chargers could deal a month from now.
On top of that, the Chargers have seven defensive players who will be free agents next year, and that includes Mack.
If the Chargers continue down this path, they may be forced to trade multiple players at the deadline for draft capital to rebuild for the future. Given how they've played so far and the difficult schedule ahead, Los Angeles could be headed for a fire sale.
