The Chargers are unlikely to trade Justin Herbert, but they could start getting calls on him if the season keeps going sideways.
NFL insider Tom Pelisseroappeared on The Rich Eisen Show and said he wouldn't be surprised if the Chargers start getting calls on Herbert if the team doesn't turn things around.
"Right now, the LA Chargers are 0-2. You look at their upcoming schedule: if they're 1-5 or 0-6, I don't think they'll trade Justin Herbert, but you can bet they're going to get calls about Justin Herbert because why not," Pelissero said.
"Bad teams: if you're having a bad season, people are going to sit there and try to take advantage of you and go after your good players. That's where the way the season plays out is going to determine a whole
lot of different things, and the more quarterbacks get hurt, the more the price might go up."
Herbert and the Chargers are off to a horrendous start to the season. They sit at 0-2, having lost their first two games to two of the league's worst teams (at least from last season), the Cardinals and Raiders.
The 28-year-old quarterback hasn't done himself any favors in those losses either.
Herbert's overall numbers and overall output have received major scrutiny, and rightfully so. He's on pace for a career low in completion percentage at 59.3%, throwing only two touchdowns, three interceptions, and 401 yards through two games.
Mike McDaniel's offense was supposed to take the Chargers to another level; instead, they look lost, and Herbert seems to look uncomfortable.
The Chargers have a gauntlet of a schedule ahead, starting in Week 3 against the Bills. Things don't look promising after what was expected to be a promising season.
Nonetheless, the Chargers still have plenty of football left to turn this around.
