Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel responded to criticism after head coach Jim Harbaugh backed him amid their 0-4 start. McDaniel spoke to the media on Thursday and faced those criticisms head-on.
"I have about zero percent entitlement... you're going to be held accountable," McDaniel said.
"That comes with the territory of the job…it's pretty easy for me to focus on what I need to focus on."
The Chargers fully believed McDaniel would be a different kind of leader for the team and Justin Herbert. McDaniel built a resume many expected him to bring to Los Angeles. He's earned a reputation as an "elite" coordinator and play-caller during his time with the 49ers and as head coach of the Dolphins.
However, that has been far from the case with
the Chargers. McDaniel is under attack for how he's handled the offense and how Herbert has suddenly regressed.
McDaniel's plan was clear: unlock Herbert, reduce sacks, and modernize the team's scheme with pre-snap motion and misdirection.
The Chargers sit at 0-4, and their offense is a big part of that. The offense ranks 29th in scoring at 16.8 points per game, which has sparked early public and media criticism regarding his playcalling and unit performance.
Harbaugh seems to believe in McDaniel, and the offensive coordinator has full confidence on his side of the ball. Now, it's time to see it on the field.
