It’s rare for a player of Aaron Donald’s caliber to be roasted in the film room, but he may not be safe from that this week. During the second half of the Los Angeles Rams’ win over the Chargers on Sunday, Donald failed to scoop up a fumble and wound up knocking it out of bounds accidentally.
Had he recovered it, the Rams would’ve gotten the ball inside the Chargers’ 25, setting them up in scoring range with a 15-point lead already. But instead of falling on the fumble, which rookie Wesley Bailey forced out, he tried to scoop it up and score a touchdown.
Mission: failed.
Sean McVay was asked about it after the game and he joked that he’s going to give him “such a hard time about that.” He also told J.B. Long that he’s “gonna crush him for that.”

-Sean McVay, able to have a laugh about Aaron Donald missing a scoop and score in a 24-9 win
“Oh man, I’m gonna give him such a hard time about that,” McVay joked. “I saw what he was thinking because it’s going right in front of you and he’s thinking, ‘I’m going to scoop and score,’ and he knocks that s--- out of bounds. I mean, what the hell? His face, he couldn’t even look at me and make eye contact after that. But at least we can laugh about it right now, right?”

As he said, the Rams can laugh about it now because they won. But had they lost that game, McVay might actually be giving his future Hall of Fame defensive tackle a hard time for missing a golden opportunity to help his team.
In Donald’s mind, he probably saw it as a chance to score his first career touchdown. But to score, you have to grab the ball first, and he couldn’t corral it when it was bouncing on the turf.
