There are not many guarantees in life, but the Los Angeles Rams' special teams unit being a major problem is one. That was the case last season, and after two missed field goals capped off another letdown, the numbers show how one portion of their operation continues to doom their entire effort.
According to ESPN's Benjamin Solak, the Rams' special teams cost them 110% in win probability last season with their excessive issues. Through five games, it's already at 104%. It shows the concerning pace Los Angeles' special teams unit is on.

In 2026, they've already lost -104% in total win probability on special teams
That's an
entire victory wiped away due to controllable factors. That's the difference between the Rams being 4-1 this season and their current standing at 2-3.
The Rams already addressed one issue, waiving kicker Harrison Mevis before signing Blake Grupe to replace him. However, the team surrendered a blocked kick and a massive return on the opening kickoff, which granted the Bills their first possession in scoring range.
Grupe has been in the NFL since 2023 and started this season on the New York Jets' practice squad. On 105 field goal attempts, he's nailed 86 of them, with a field goal make percentage of 81.9%. He's only missed two extra point attempts out of 98 tries and has a long of 60 yards.
The hope is that he'll cut into the team's propensity to throw away football games.
