Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea has requested a trade out of Tampa Bay, according to multiple reportsMonday. The Athletic's Ted Nguyenadded specifics on his preferred destination, reporting Vea "wants to go to a California team or the Raiders."
Although other reports indicate Vea doesn't have a preferred landing spot, the West Coast lean would narrow the field to four teams: the Rams, Chargers, 49ers and Raiders. And while it would be a crazy move, a deal with the Rams looks unlikely — for a few reasons.
The first is cost. Los Angeles has already sent out a heavy haul of draft capital to land Myles Garrett and Trent McDuffie this offseason. After those deals, the Rams are left with their 2027 second- and fourth-through-sixth-round picks,
their 2028 first- and third-through-seventh-round picks, and their 2029 first, second and fourth-through-seventh-round picks. Recent defensive tackle trade comps suggest Vea wouldn't come cheap, either: Dexter Lawrence cost the Bengals the No. 10 overall pick, and Osa Odighizuwa cost the 49ers a 2026 third-rounder.
The second issue is contract. Vea is in the final year of his deal, set to earn $17 million in base salary with a $22,194,460 cap hit, and he's expected to push for an extension as part of any trade. That adds another significant cost on top of draft compensation.
The third is roster fit. The Rams' defensive tackle room already includes Kobie Turner, who is seeking his own extension, along with Poona Ford, Tyler Davis, Garrett and Braden Fiske. Adding Vea into that mix — while also needing to pay Turner or trading him in the process — would create a logjam at the position rather than solve a need.
Between the draft capital already spent, the cap and extension questions, and the depth already on the roster, a Vea trade doesn't line up with where the Rams currently stand.
Still, it's worth remembering who's making the calls. Sean McVay and Les Snead have shown a willingness to keep pushing resources toward a championship roster even when the fit isn't obvious on paper. A move for Vea would be overkill on a stacked defensive line — but with this front office, it's not entirely off the table.
