The Los Angeles Rams are set to be without star defender Myles Garrett for at least four weeks as the NFL's reigning Defensive Player of the Year is being placed on injured reserve, opening up a role in the starting lineup for an outside linebacker.
While players such as Desjuan Johnson and Wesley Bailey are set to have an increased role, the player presumed to take over Garrett's starting role is Josaiah Stewart. A second-year linebacker from Michigan, Stewart has blossomed as a professional, using his veteran-like mindset to speed through his initial development.
As he's on the verge of a massive opportunity to establish himself as a pillar of the defense, head coach Sean McVay spoke about Stewart's growth in the wake of Garrett's absence.
“I've
seen consistent growth," McVay said in his presser on Monday. "I thought he did a lot of good things the other day. I think he's a complete player that can really be a positive contributor in both phases, defending the run, rushing the passer. He’ll be asked to step up, as will everybody in that group."
On the "Coach McVay Show" Monday, McVay continued to rave about the second-year edge rusher.
"Josaiah Stewart's a guy I have a lot of confidence in. Going into Year 2, very tough and physical in both phases. He's got a savvy – he's got a great feel for the game. Plays sturdy against the run, he's got some rush creativity as a pass rusher. And great instincts, so looking forward to seeing him."
As Garrett did miss the majority of training camp and preseason, Stewart was taking a lot of those reps already, cementing himself as a constant presence. After playing 43% of the snaps in Week 1, he's certainly ready to go. Los Angeles could be on the verge of witnessing another defender have a surprise breakthrough.
