A lot of players were key and critical in the Los Angeles Rams’ comeback win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday afternoon. Matthew Stafford shook off two interceptions, Puka Nacua was unguardable down the stretch, Byron Young applied constant pressure and Trent McDuffie was outstanding in coverage again.
But Kyren Williams was the real catalyst on offense. He put up 147 total yards and two touchdowns, catching a career-high 10 passes and averaging a healthy 5.0 yards per carry on the ground.
He scored the Rams’ two late touchdowns in the fourth quarter to steal the win from the Eagles, first with 3:59 left and then the game-winner with 1:10 remaining. The Rams kept feeding him the ball, whether on passes or handoffs, and he delivered each
time.
Sean McVay shared some major praise for his running back after the game, leaving no doubt that he’d want to be in any foxhole with Williams.
“It’s just who he is. I mean you look at it, look at the way he played last week. And even when I was going back and you watch the way that he played when we came here in Week 3 last year, just watch the spirit, the energy, the competitiveness,” McVay said. “I freaking love that guy. I love everything he’s about. If you say you wouldn’t want that guy in your foxhole, then you’re in the wrong foxhole. But I feel really good about being with him, continuing to just watch him be a leader that energizes situations he’s around and people that he’s around. And he does that for me. I love everything the guy’s about. I love the human being way more, but what a freaking competitor he is, too. He was outstanding and we needed every single play that he made, and he should have made a bunch of them.”
Williams is off to a great start this season, ranking first in the NFL in rushing success rate (64.8%) and fourth in yards per carry (5.4). What’s made him particularly impressive is his dual-threat ability, entering Week 5 with the sixth-most yards from scrimmage (467).
He’s always been a capable receiver, but the Rams are really capitalizing on that aspect of his game by targeting him 25 times, with Williams catching 21 of those passes for 173 yards. For comparison, he was only targeted 50 times in 17 games last season, and just 40 times in 16 games the year before.
