Justin Herbert had a tough time against the Los Angeles Rams in Sunday’s loss. He threw for 257 yards, but the Chargers didn’t score a single touchdown and he threw two bad interceptions.
During an appearance on the “St. Brown Podcast,” Rams defensive back Quentin Lake – who picked off Herbert once in the win – called out the Chargers quarterback by saying he was “throwing deli meat” and “seeing ghosts” against the Rams defense. It was a brutal and blatant shot at Herbert, who has struggled mightily all season.
“I mean, he was throwing deli meat out there. He’s seeing ghosts, I’m not gonna lie," Lake said, trying to hold back his laughter.
Herbert was asked about Lake’s comments during his presser on Wednesday and he said he hadn’t heard what Lake said.
“I haven’t looked into it, haven’t heard anything about it, so I can’t really make a comment about it,” he told reporters, via Chargers Wire. “We’re really just focused on what’s going on in the building, playing football and doing what we can and doing our best to, you know, go put our best effort out on Sunday. And that’s all that really matters. Anything outside of that is out of our control.”
Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh was also asked about Lake’s criticism, and he defended his quarterback.
“As far as anybody’s opinion, I don’t see that,” he said. “Everybody’s entitled to their opinion. Not what I see."
As for what Harbaugh saw, here’s what he said.
“Pass game, I thought he played – did his job exceptionally well. You know, two throws he would have liked to have back," Harbaugh added.
There's no denying that Herbert has struggled this season, throwing a league-high 10 interceptions – at least one in every game. He and the Chargers moved the ball at points in Sunday's game against the Rams, but it wasn't particularly close in the second half after the Rams got going on offense.
