After an up-and-down first four weeks of the season, the Los Angeles Rams face a measuring-stick game on Monday night against the 3-1 Buffalo Bills. The San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos and Philadelphia Eagles were all legitimate tests, but the Bills are the class of the AFC and a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
Beating the Bills will not be easy, but these six matchups will decide whether the Rams come away victorious at home or they drop below .500 again.
RG Kevin Dotson vs. DT Deone Walker
Walker has been a force for the Bills this season, recording the second-most pressures of anyone on the team with 19. At 6-7, 331 pounds, he's simply a massive human being who is difficult to move, which makes him a problem in the run game. But he's also athletic and powerful enough to beat
opposing guards and centers when rushing the passer.
Dotson is a monster on the interior but even he has his work cut out for him against Walker. The Rams must ensure Walker has at least two hands on him on every snap, whether they're running the ball or passing it.
DB Quentin Lake vs. TE Dalton Kincaid
With D.J. Moore's status up in the air, the Bills' biggest pass-catching threat could be Kincaid. The fourth-year tight end leads the team with 270 yards on 15 receptions, continuing to grow as the Bills' big-play tight end. Lake is excellent against tight ends and slot receivers, so the Rams have their counter to Kincaid.
Los Angeles could also deploy Trent McDuffie against him, but Lake has the size and speed to match up with Buffalo's dynamic tight end. This matchup becomes even more important in the event that Moore can't play.
RT Warren McClendon Jr. vs. OLB Greg Rousseau
Rousseau is one of the top candidates for Defensive Player of the Year right now with his league-leading six sacks, 29 pressures, eight tackles for a loss and 16 QB hits. He's blossomed into a dominant player on the edge for Buffalo, which makes this a challenging matchup for McClendon on the right side.
With Walker on the interior, doubling Rousseau on the edge isn't really an option unless it's with a tight end. But ideally, McClendon will be able to handle him alone in one-on-one matchups.
WR Davante Adams vs. CB Maxwell Hairston
Puka Nacua should be able to win whatever matchup he's faced with, but the Rams desperately need someone else to step up. Ideally, that player will be Adams, who was unguardable in the two games Nacua didn't play. Hairston has given up two touchdowns in coverage but he's allowed only eight catches on 15 targets for 102 yards, per PFF.
Adams is a technician and should find ways to get open against Hairston, who has excellent speed but is still young and inexperienced.
DT Aaron Donald vs. G Alec Anderson
Donald is trending toward returning after missing Week 4 with back soreness, which makes life on Anderson a bit more difficult. Anderson has a 41.3 pass-blocking grade, per PFF, which is the worst of any Bills lineman. He's allowed eight pressures and one sack, so he appears to be the weak link up front for Buffalo.
Donald has been good in the two games he's played but this could be his best performance yet against Anderson.
Chris Shula vs. QB Josh Allen
No one player can contain Allen by himself. It'll take a complete team effort to slow down the 2025 MVP quarterback. That puts Shula at the forefront of this effort as the defensive coordinator. He needs to blitz at the appropriate time, disguise coverages pre-snap and try to limit the damage Allen does as a runner.
Shula's group has been excellent the last three weeks but they haven't faced a quarterback quite like Allen.
