Over the offseason, the Los Angeles Rams made the shocking decision to part ways with Jared Verse, their first-round pick in 2024. He was part of the package sent to the Cleveland Browns for Myles Garrett, along with three future draft picks.
Both players made their debuts with their new teams over the weekend, much to the excitement of their respective fanbases.
Similar to Garrett’s first game with the Rams, Verse’s debut with the Browns was disappointing. He finished the game with four tackles, one of which went for a loss, but zero sacks or quarterback hits. According to Pro Football Focus, Verse didn’t record a single pressure and also missed one tackle.
His overall grade was 57.6, and it’s just the first time in his career that he failed to
record at least one pressure in a game. Verse had at least two pressures in all 20 games he played last year, including the playoffs, averaging five per game.
As he always did with the Rams, Verse took the blame for Cleveland’s shortcomings in its 34-10 loss.
"It looks worse than what it was. It was just self-inflicted wounds, myself included,” he said. “We weren't rushing as a unit up front, wasn't getting to the quarterback quick enough. Our DBs can't cover forever; that's something I got to chalk up to us up front. I'm gonna put a lot on me. I gotta be better than that."
Verse and the Browns will face the Buccaneers next week, a 1 p.m. ET kickoff in Tampa Bay. The Rams won’t face the Browns this season so they won’t get an up-close look at their former first-round pick, but it’ll be interesting to see how he does in his first year in Cleveland.
