Following an embarrassing Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, the Los Angeles Rams will try to avoid a dreaded 0-2 start this week when they host the New York Giants at SoFi Stadium. It's their first time facing the Giants since the 2023 season, but under Sean McVay, they've had nothing but success against New York.
Here are seven stats and facts to know for the Rams' upcoming game on Monday Night Football.
Rams are 30-17 all-time vs. Giants, including 4-0 under Sean McVay
Historically, the Rams have owned the Giants. More importantly, they're undefeated against New York with McVay as their head coach. Since 2017, the Rams are a perfect 4-0 against the Giants, winning three of those four games by at least eight points.
Their first win against the Giants under McVay came in 2017, a 51-17 road win at MetLife
Stadium. Most recently, they beat the Giants in 2023 on New Year's Eve, 26-25, also at MetLife. The Rams have won four in a row against the Giants after losing seven straight prior to McVay's arrival.
Matthew Stafford is 5-2 in his career against the Giants
Stafford is familiar with the Giants, having faced them seven times in his NFL career thus far. He's 5-2 in those games, including 2-0 with the Rams, and has averaged 267 yards per game in those starts. In total, he's thrown 12 touchdown passes to just seven picks, with a passer rating of 98.4.
Side note: Stafford's brother-in-law, Chad Hall, is the wide receivers coach and assistant quarterbacks coach for the Giants.
Rams were 4-1 following a loss last season
Under McVay, the Rams have been very good in games following a loss – with the exception of the disastrous 2022 season. Last year, they were 4-1 following a loss, avoiding dreaded losing streaks in all but one instance. The only time they lost back-to-back games was in Weeks 16 and 17, falling to the Seahawks in overtime before also losing to the Falcons the following week.
Giants lead NFL in plays, yards and time of possession per drive
The Giants offense couldn't have been more efficient than it was against the Cowboys in Week 1. They only had seven possessions in the 28-20 win, scoring touchdowns on four of the drives. They averaged 9.7 plays, 56.6 yards and 5:14 of possession per drive, all of which lead the NFL after one week.
They're also second with an average of four points per possession. The Rams, meanwhile, are last with an average of 0.7 points per drive.
Giants have best 3rd-down offense in NFL, Rams are 26th
Part of the reason the Giants were able to sustain drives so consistently against Dallas was their third-down efficiency. New York went 9-for-11 on third down, with one of those "failed" attempts being Jaxson Dart's kneeldown on the final play of the game. The other was a run for no gain by Cam Skattebo on third-and-2.
The Rams were nowhere near as successful on third in the opener, going 2-for-9, which is a conversion rate of only 22%. That ranks 26th in the NFL after one game.
Rams scored fewest points of any team in Week 1
After leading the league in scoring last season, the Rams came out sluggish in Week 1. They scored just seven points, the only team in the league not to put up at least 10 points. It's just the fifth time since 1994 that the Rams didn't score at least 10 points in their season opener.
Rams allowed zero sacks, Giants defense recorded zero sacks in Week 1
One of the positive takeaways from last week's loss was the pass protection. After allowing the fewest sacks in the NFL last season, the Rams O-line picked up right where it left off by allowing zero sacks again on Thursday night. The 49ers did have eight quarterback hits, but they failed to record a sack.
The Rams will now face a Giants defense that boasts a great pass rush, but one that didn't have a sack in Week 1, either.
