For years, there was a perception that the Los Angeles Rams — or most NFL teams — weren't willing to spend big money on safeties. Quentin Lake hopes his new contract helps change that.
Lake discussed the perception surrounding the Rams and safety contracts during an appearance on the "NFL Spotlight with Ari Meirov"
podcast, explaining how much it meant to him to become the player who could help change that narrative.“You hear the stories all the time of, man, the Rams don't pay safeties,” Lake said. “That was like one of the things I was like, I hope I can change it.”
Los Angeles signed Lake to a three-year, $38.25 million extension on Jan. 1, 2026, keeping him under contract through the 2028 season. The deal includes $25.5 million in guarantees
and carries an average annual value of $12.75 million, which ranks 17th among safeties.
Lake said the timing of the deal was especially meaningful because of how his career had unfolded and how the season had gone while he was an impending free agent. Lake missed seven games due to an elbow injury, but that didn't prevent the Rams from offering a deal.
“I was just like, okay, like it's just bound to happen,” Lake said. “I get hurt. And, you know, getting hurt sometimes, you know, it's always in the NFL, next man up.”
That injury came during the 2025 season, when Lake was placed on injured reserve after playing the first 10 games. Before the injury, he had 61 tackles, 10 passes defended, one interception and one sack while playing every defensive snap in the games he was healthy for. Lake returned to practice around the same time the Rams were working through his extension, making the sequence of events particularly meaningful to him.
“That happened when the contract happened was on the first day of the year. It was January 1st of 2026, which was crazy,” Lake said. “And then I was also at that time I was I started practicing that week to come back. So there were so many things that just aligned.”
Lake believes his contract was more than a personal accomplishment. He hopes it demonstrated that the Rams are willing to make significant investments in defensive backs who earn them.
“I made enough of an impact on this organization hopefully to change the narrative of them, you know, paying defensive players or paying defensive backs and all that stuff, too,” Lake said.
The Rams' decision to extend Lake came after he had established himself as one of their most versatile defensive pieces. He recorded 111 tackles in 2024 and has 264 tackles, 29 passes defended, four sacks and two interceptions across his career.
He's continued to produce in 2026. Through four games, Lake has 29 tackles, 18 solo tackles, seven passes defended and one interception.
