Nate Scheelhaase made his official debut as the Los Angeles Rams' offensive coordinator last week, and despite issues with the offense, there were a lot of positive takeaways from the defeat.
Recently, Scheelhaase was asked about his experience. The result wasn't what the team was looking for, but one of the good things is that their issues are fixable. The reason is the communication of the staff, the main thing Scheelhaase touched upon in his response.
“I think with our staff, there's always been great collaboration, great communication," said Scheelhaase. "I feel like there are a lot of similarities to what it has even looked like before. [Head Coach] Sean [McVay] does such a great job of communicating thoughts between series and just being
able to communicate around the staff. So having a staff that has been around each other helps.
"You get back into your flow and you certainly want to make a couple adjustments as you go throughout the weeks. But I thought from a staff perspective, just the in-game communication, it was what we wanted to have.”
Scheelhaase was promoted this offseason, after spending the last two seasons in an offensive assistant role. In 2024, he was the passing game specialist before being named pass game coordinator last season. One of the things that constantly gets mentioned regarding the Rams' offense is that while McVay is the main playcaller, it's a collaborative process that involves a variety of voices.
The voices increased this offseason, with the addition of assistant head coach Kliff Kingsbury. It will be interesting to see how these elements play out in the early season.
