Last Monday, Los Angeles Rams receiver Davante Adams had the greatest performance of his Rams career, as the All-Pro recorded eight receptions for 195 yards and two touchdowns. His work was simply poetic, as he plucked passes out of the sky in a game that made many reflect on his incredible career so far.
Despite his age, it appears he is still in his prime. On Friday, Rams head coach Sean McVay spoke about his star receiver. Last season, it was Adams' ability to dominate in the red zone that gave the franchise championship hope. In 2026, Adams is the top-producing pass catcher. McVay stated he believes his receiver is the greatest separator in NFL history, calling Adams' work an art form.
“Appreciation for their route craft," said McVay. "There’s
a nuance. The one thing I will say is he's wired to be able to separate. The two things when you look for a receiver, can you get open and catch the football? And this guy's one of the greatest separators that this game has ever seen. That’s in all phases of the route. That's obviously off the line of scrimmage, his ability to be able to get parallel, work edges on people.
"You hear him talk about it, it's almost like a boxer slipping punches, but it's an art form. If you talk to him about this stuff, you can really see there's so much depth that he's pulling from. I've seen this documentary, it was about people that are great in their craft. There were two things that they said those people had in a bunch of different arenas, a rage to master and ability to pick things up quickly in their domain. That's what Davante is as a receiver in this game. It is stuff that I think a lot of people can respect, but not many people can ever replicate it.”
One of the most detailed players in the NFL, Adams’ ability to create leverage at the line of scrimmage, paired with his deep understanding of how to induce and exploit weaknesses in defensive backs, has made him a future Hall of Famer.
Considering Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford won three MVPs total while working with Adams, the numbers and results speak for themselves.
In Denver on Sunday night, Adams takes on 2024 Defensive Player of the Year Pat Surtain II. Perhaps that game will show just how effective the veteran remains.
