Myles Garrett was the Los Angeles Rams’ second big trade acquisition during the offseason, but fans haven’t had much of a chance to see him in uniform. He missed most of training camp and has now been sidelined for the last three weeks after having knee surgery, with no clear return timetable in place.
Sean McVay said on Monday that he would meet with head trainer Reggie Scott about Garrett’s progress and share an update on Thursday, but that update never came.
When asked about Garrett’s progress during Thursday’s press conference, McVay said he hasn’t had a chance to talk with Scott and called himself a “total idiot” for failing to get more clarity on the Rams star.
“I really haven't even had a chance to specifically – I know that the rehab is
progressing well,” he said. “He's looked good in the meetings. Literally as I was walking up, I realized that I had said I'd have more of an update and I thought to myself, 'Oh s---, I don't have more of an update on Myles.’ I'm a total idiot, but I haven't had a chance – here's what I'll tell you, though. I'll find out so that I can have a little bit more of a specific answer for you guys. I feel like Ron Burgundy up here right now.”
As for whether Garrett could return to practice at the end of his four-week injured reserve stint, McVay simply said, “I’m not sure yet.”
McVay and the Rams have chosen not to put a timeline on Garrett’s return. They know he’ll miss at least one more game, which is Monday night against the Bills, before becoming eligible to return from IR for Week 6.
But with the lack of clarity and updates from McVay, it’s becoming increasingly likely that Garrett will spend more than the minimum four weeks on IR.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported a couple of weeks ago that Garrett was given a six-week timeline, which would put his return at Week 8 instead. McVay responded to that report by saying, “That’s new to me,” reiterating that the Rams haven’t set a timeline for his return.
It’s been a frustrating start to Garrett’s tenure with the Rams, but hopefully he can return sooner rather than later.
