One of the big surprises in Week 1 for the Los Angeles Rams was their use of backup running back Blake Corum. Corum is listed as the team's RB2, with his output nearly matching the starter. He had only one fewer carry than Kyren Williams, with Corum racking up a team-leading 54 yards.
The team's rushing attack was the best part of the offense, as Corum and Williams flashed a bit of potential as they look to establish themselves as the league's next best running back duo, and it seems that the Rams are ready to increase his workload.
On Monday, Rams head coach Sean McVay was asked about Corum, calling him a key factor for their operation and detailing how important he believes the Michigan man will be this season.
"I thought Blake did a nice job
with the opportunities that he did have," said McVay. "The one good cutback run, had some good things. I think there are always growth opportunities for everybody, but those two guys are going to be major positive contributors for us. They're going to be key factors for us."
The other player McVay was referring to was Quentin Lake. Corum looked excellent in the opener, flashing an exciting balance of patience and explosive speed, allowing his blockers to power ahead before finding his opening. The team is committed to improving their passing attack, as its failures would preemptively end their ability to run the ball throughout the game.
With the New York Giants on the horizon, a team that loves to control the clock and bleed out ballgames, the Rams must be able to stay ahead of the chains. If they don't, New York could take an early two-possession lead by capitalizing on field position before controlling the clock and working down a Los Angeles defense that will be without Myles Garrett.
That's what they did against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1. It's time to see if Corum finally eclipses Williams in carries, and if he's emerging as the team's next offensive star.
