Whether he plays or not, the San Francisco 49ers will now have to prepare for the possibility of Aaron Donald being on the field in Melbourne next week. The Los Angeles Rams legend came out of retirement and returned to the team he spent his entire 10-year career with, making one more run at a Super Bowl this season.
The Rams, of course, will face the 49ers in their season opener, and San Francisco’s GM John Lynch admitted he never thought Donald returning was a possibility. He says the Rams “got better, certainly,” with Donald back, but he thinks the 49ers are “pretty good, too.”
“Yeah, I mean, the guy’s different, right?” he said in his press conference Monday. “He’s an exceptional player, one of the greats. I do subscribe to that. I think we’re
pretty good too. They got better, certainly, with him deciding to come out of retirement. Now, there’s time away, but I know that guy trains like a bad man. I ran into him in a hotel somewhere a while back and we had some fun chatter back and forth.
"Never thought he’d do it, but he’s doing it. And so, we better get ready for it.”
Sean McVay has said he isn’t sure whether Donald will play in the opener against the 49ers, but he “wouldn’t rule anything out yet” when it comes to the Week 1 plan. Whether Donald plays or not, McVay is confident in his group regardless.
The 49ers are a talented team, too, but there may not be a more loaded roster than the Rams’ this season.
