Already sitting at 0-3 and in last place in the NFC South, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were dealt a serious blow when quarterback Baker Mayfield injured his right thumb in Sunday's loss to the Minnesota Vikings. It's expected to sideline him for at least three weeks, and while rookie Jalon Daniels will step in as the starter, the Bucs are giving a former Rams quarterback a look.
According to Greg Auman of FOX Sports, the Buccaneers have signed former Rams quarterback Brett Rypien to the practice squad. Rypien has bounced around the league since his stint with the Rams in 2023, signing with eight different teams in the last three years.
His last start came with the Rams in 2023, a disastrous 20-3 loss to the Packers in Green Bay. He threw for 130
yards and an interception in that game, which was his fourth career start.
The Bucs only have Mayfield and Daniels on the 53-man roster, so there's a chance Rypien could be the backup moving forward while Mayfield is sidelined.
