Matthew Stafford is heading into his 18th NFL season, and Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay isn't treating it like a farewell tour.
Speaking with Trey Wingo of "Inside Football"
at Rams training camp, McVay pushed back on any notion that Stafford's MVP 2025 season was a last hurrah before decline. Instead, McVay described watching a quarterback who has only gotten more comfortable in his own game."I do think it was the highest quality of football that he played last year," McVay said. "But what I felt from him was a stillness, a peace and enjoyment.
"I do believe that he's capable of playing a lot longer than people think, God willing, if he's able to stay healthy."
There were questions about Stafford's longevity with the Rams considering
he just turned 38 and the Rams drafted Ty Simpson in the first round of the 2026 NFL draft. However, McVay has been adamant that Stafford is still the team's immediate future. He even noted that Stafford could play two more years with the team before he was rewardedwith a new $55 million extension that keeps him in Los Angeles through 2027.
This is just another example of McVay's steadfast resolve when it comes to his star quarterback. And if McVay's multiple comments hold up, Stafford's tenure in Los Angeles may not be ending anytime soon.
