The talk of Sunday night’s game between the Los Angeles Rams and Denver Broncos has been about Josh Wallace’s controversial pass interference penalty late in the fourth quarter. It came on third down and gave the Broncos a fresh set of downs in the red area, which later led to the game-winning touchdown by Bo Nix.
Wallace appeared to intercept the pass intended for Pat Bryant but the official said he interfered with the receiver, causing a flag to be thrown.
Sean McVay’s postgame press conference was less than 2 minutes long but he did address the penalty – albeit, only briefly.
“I’ll look at it,” he said. “Looked like it was a good, competitive play from my vantage point, but we’ll go back and look at it and see what they say.”
On the broadcast,
McVay was visibly upset about the call, seemingly saying, “You can’t call that.” But the flag was thrown and the Broncos won the game, leaving a sour taste in the mouths of McVay and everyone on the Rams’ side.
McVay will address the media again on Monday, at which point he could give additional thoughts on the play and game after digesting it overnight. But his stance is unlikely to change.
It didn’t appear Wallace did much to impede Bryant and simply made a great play on the ball. The official just didn't see it that way, which, unfortunately for the Rams, is all that matters.
