Since signing kicker Harrison Mevis, the Los Angeles Rams have gone from having one of the worst kicking units in the NFL to a team that consistently sends balls through the uprights. Joining the team in the middle of the 2025 season, Mevis only missed one kick in the regular season and was perfect in the playoffs.
In 2026, Mevis has gone 4-for-5 on field goal attempts, converting all seven of his point-after attempts. There's not much not to like regarding Mevis' game; however, with a career-long of only 52 yards in a league that is witnessing his contemporaries make kicks from 60-plus yards, some wonder if Mevis' power is as good as his accuracy; 52 yards is Mevis' longest attempt, and both misses were under 50 yards.
On Monday, head coach Sean
McVay said that the reason why Mevis hasn't attempted longer kicks is that the opportunity hasn't been there, and his kicker has range if they need him to use it.
“Very, he has great range," said McVay of his comfort with Mevis kicking from long distance. "He hit one from 68 in pregame warm-ups yesterday. Obviously, the ball carries a little bit better in that altitude, but he has great range. Sometimes when you see us go for it, it doesn't have anything to do with my confidence and his ability to be able to execute. It's more about, do we think we can play for points? And if we didn't convert there, are we comfortable with where we put our defense on the field? There are a lot of layers that go into the decision-making, but I am very comfortable and confident in Mevis and his range.”
Considering McVay had the NFL's No. 1 passing offense in 2025 and a loaded unit that's overcoming injuries this year, it's easy to see why he trusts his offense to convert on fourth down. You can't get mad at a coach who is playing for touchdowns. The byproduct of that, unfortunately, is that we have no indication of how good Mevis' range is in a game setting.
