After Aaron Donald signed an adjusted one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams, the team was right up against the salary cap. Even with his modest cap hit of $5.8 million, they needed to create some space before Week 1.
They did just that on Wednesday, restructuring the contract of team captain Quentin Lake. They converted $4.285 million of his salary into a signing bonus, adding two void years to spread that money out beyond the end of his deal, according to Over The Cap.
In doing so, the Rams created $3.42 million in cap room for 2026 by lowering his cap hit by that amount. They are now $2.8 million under the cap after previously being slightly over the limit.
Lake signed a three-year extension worth up to $42 million in January, which runs through
the 2028 season. The two void years are tacked on to the end of the deal, giving him a dead cap charge of $1.7 million in 2029.
If needed at some point this season, the Rams can also restructure the deals of Matthew Stafford and others to create even more cap space. But for now, they're at least in compliance before their season opener against the 49ers.
