Matthew Stafford has played some of the best football of his career over the past two seasons. He has also had some of the worst luck.
According to CBS Sports' Doug Clawson, Stafford is the only quarterback in the past two seasons to lose a game with at least 370 passing yards, three or more touchdown passes and no interceptions. And he has done it four times, three of which occurred in overtime.

Matthew Stafford (Monday vs Bills, OT)
Matthew Stafford (NFC Champ at Seahawks)
Matthew Stafford (Week 16, 2025 at Seahawks, OT)
Matthew Stafford (Week 5, 2025 vs 49ers, OT)
The latest came Monday against the Buffalo Bills. Stafford went 40-of-54 for 383 yards and three touchdowns without a turnover,
and the Rams still lost 37-34 in overtime.
The first came in Week 5 of 2025 against the San Francisco 49ers, when he threw for 389 yards and three touchdowns in a 26-23 overtime loss. In Week 16 at Seattle, he piled up 457 yards and three touchdowns, but the Rams fell 38-37 in overtime. Then came the NFC Championship Game at Seattle, where he threw for 374 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-27 loss.
Across the four games, Stafford has thrown for 1,603 yards and 12 touchdowns with zero interceptions. The Rams are 0-4 in those games, and the combined margin of defeat is 11 points.
The Rams lost all four games in different ways, too. Against the Bills on Monday, missed field goals left points on the board in a three-point overtime loss, including a potential game-winning field goal that was blocked. In Week 5 of 2025, Joshua Karty’s missed PAT and a fourth-down call in overtime doomed them against the 49ers. A controversial two-point conversion swung the Week 16 game in Seattle, which the Rams lost by a single point. In the NFC Championship Game, Xavier Smith muffed a third-quarter punt, which Seattle recovered and turned into a touchdown, giving Seattle a 24-13 lead that the Rams couldn't crawl back from.
Sometimes, the ball bounces the wrong way and potential wins turn into losses. For Stafford, this has happened a lot in the past two seasons. The Rams are 2-3 heading into Week 6, and Stafford has been good enough to be a lot better than that. But if the Rams can't avoid these late blunders, things could get ugly quickly.
