Sean McVay announced on Tuesday that Aaron Donald will not play in the Los Angeles Rams’ season opener against the San Francisco 49ers, and he won’t even make the trip to Australia with the team. Donald only rejoined the Rams last Sunday, so he’s understandably taking some time to get back into full-on football shape.
When the Rams originally released their depth chart for Week 1, Donald was listed as a starter at defensive end. Kobie Turner and Poona Ford were the other starting defensive linemen, with Braden Fiske backing Donald up.
The team updated its depth chart recently and made one slight change: Donald and Fiske are now co-starters up front, being listed as Aaron Donald -or- Braden Fiske.
Fiske has been a starter for the last two seasons,
but when Donald returned, he was the player most at risk of losing playing time. That’s still the case now, but Donald isn’t yet ready to take the field – at least not halfway across the world in Melbourne.
With Donald out, Fiske will resume his starting spot next to Ford, and will be flanked by either Myles Garrett or Byron Young on the edge. It’s still an incredibly talented defensive front for the Rams, and it’ll get even better once Donald is ready to suit up on Sundays.
