It was abundantly clear just how important Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles was to Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams. After blowing a 16-point lead to the Denver Broncos last week, they were staring another disappointing loss in the face when they trailed the Eagles by 10 points in the fourth quarter.
After the Rams sealed the win with a defensive stop on fourth down with seconds remaining, Sean McVay sprinted – more like skipped – down the sideline to celebrate with his players, almost leapfrogging defensive back Quentin Lake.
On Monday afternoon, he poked fun at himself and said he’ll “never skip like that again.”
“I don't know. I don't know what the hell the skipping was, that looked really weird. That was bad,” he joked.

But on a more serious note, he just wants his players to feel that he’s part of the game with them and let all his excitement out after they clinched the win.
“What I always hope, and I think you know this, is that our players feel like I'm in it with them,” he said. “I got some good air right there though, so I'll take that. 'Q' turned around like, 'What the hell are you doing, man?' I was excited. I just love these guys, and I love seeing them have excitement and earn the opportunity to be able to celebrate with their teammates. I certainly don't want to miss that and you want to make sure that you're enjoying all these moments, especially with what it felt like leading up to that. For the guys to be able to earn that, that was pretty cool. I'm always going to try to be authentically myself and I'll never skip like that again.”
Even at 40 years old and in his 10th season with the Rams, he has as much energy and exuberance as any coach in the NFL. He’s still one of the youngest, so that helps, but he’s always full of energy on the sidelines and the practice field with his players.
It's part of what makes him such a great coach, being able to connect with his players on a personal level beyond the professional role he plays on the Rams' staff.
