Before the Los Angeles Rams watched the Buffalo Bills kick the game-winning field goal in their loss on Monday night, their own kicker, Harrison Mevis, had a 48-yarder blocked. Having already missed one in regulation, Mevis' low kick in overtime was saved from even more scrutiny because it was blocked by outside linebacker Greg Rousseau.
Mevis was waived by the team this week, but that didn't stop franchise legend Andrew Whitworth from sharing his thoughts on the situation. The Super Bowl champion took issue with Mevis' postgame demeanor, stating that his joking nature following his on-field failures doesn't align with the mindset of the people like Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford.
"The biggest thing that just irritates me – I'm still salty about
it," Whitworth said on the "Fitz and Whit" podcast. "It's one thing to have some of these kicks missed, and Harrison Mevis is, obviously, this year, it's been a struggle. But like post-game, I'm watching. He's laughing and keekeeing with guys. Like, I don't mean to get like this, but I do. When I messed up, if I give up a sack at the end of the game or pressure or whatever, the first thing I'm doing is running into the locker room, and I'm gonna be so pissed off, I don't want to talk to nobody. I'm just sitting there going, like, man, if I missed a kick, or if I missed two kicks, one's blocked, you know, I don't know. I don't understand it.
"The identity and the mentality of football teams that are really good usually match up. Like, when you go look at the teams that lose a lot, I can show you a lot of guys that don't always show they care the most. But like, if you are in the mood to go laugh and keekee with some Bills players after the game, you don't match up to the head coach's mentality because I know that dude. Like, the whole world stops when he doesn't perform. When Matthew Stafford, at this point in his career, what he's trying to accomplish, what Davante Adams wants, what Aaron Donald came back for, right? Like, there is no answer other than winning. You see, Mevis gets released. It's exactly what I'm saying. There's an identity and mentality to our football team."
Whit has some thoughts on Mevis and the end of Monday Night Football:

Whitworth continued by saying that Mevis may not have been a fit with the Rams because of how differently he handled losses than other people in the building.
For a team that's all in on winning a Super Bowl, there's no place for joking after a loss – especially in a game where he missed two kicks.
"When we see that after a game, it's not a like discredit to him. It's, 'Hey, man, maybe it's not a fit. Like you don't understand what this means to some of the people in our locker room. We want to feel this way the same way and when you don't perform well, and it doesn't seem like – all right, remember, perception is reality a lot in the NFL. It doesn't seem like this hurts you as bad as it's going to hurt all of us.' I think sometimes you're going to see an organization, like, they're going to (say), 'Hey, why are we keeping this guy or why are we not?' It's a lot easier to say, 'You know what, maybe this isn't a fit, and we've got to go a different direction.'"
The Rams did make a move, bringing in Blake Grupe to replace Mevis. However, the Rams' inability to replace Matt Gay following his 2022 exit has been a persistent issue for the franchise.
With their record at 2-3, one has to wonder how the veterans in the building are feeling if Whitworth, who is retired, is speaking with this much passion regarding their predicament. We'll see their response when they host the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday.
