Legendary St. Louis Rams running back and current Southern University head coach Marshall Faulk announced on Wednesday that he has Parkinson's disease.
Faulk was a guest on The Caring Neurologist
, speaking with Dr. Sandeep Thakkar about his health journey, how Parkinson's has affected his life, and how early detection has allowed him to continue to enjoy life, including his major role as a college head coach.He stated that he takes medication and doesn't have a lot of issues, but keeps an eye on the "little tremors" he gets, along with his balance and his ability to walk. Faulk wants to use his platform to advocate for more affordable healthcare options and education on the disease.
Even with Parkinson's and the wear-and-tear of an NFL career,
Faulk's thought process hasn't been affected, giving him the ability to continue in his pursuits.
"My brain's fine," said Faulk. "I feel clear of thought, and I guess that's a good thing, whether it's old age or whatever."
Faulk's positive outlook continues to inspire others, just like his days on the gridiron.
Faulk began his coaching career as the running backs coach for Deion Sanders' Colorado program before taking the Southern job this year.
From 1999-2005, Faulk was a member of the Rams, winning Super Bowl XXXIV, 2000 NFL MVP, three straight NFL Offensive Player of the Year awards, and three first-team All-Pro selections. He is a member of both the Pro Football and College Football Hall of Fame.
