Sean McVay was pursued by Amazon Prime Video following the 2022 season when he considered stepping away from coaching. Amazon reportedly offered him $20 million per year to join the broadcast booth for “Thursday Night Football,” but McVay turned the deal down and continued as the Los Angeles Rams’ head coach.
It seems Amazon hasn’t taken its eye off McVay just yet.
According to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, Amazon has agreed to a contract extension with Kirk Herbstreit, but the company is still keeping the door open for McVay if he were to retire from coaching. Per Marchand, Herbstreit’s new deal is “shorter than his initial contract,” which was originally for five years.
Amazon Prime Video has agreed to an extension with Kirk Herbstreit to remain
as its NFL game analyst on “Thursday Night Football.” But the terms give Amazon flexibility to move on if one of its top targets, like Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay, becomes available, according to sources briefed on the decision who were not authorized to speak publicly.
Back in 2022, when Prime was trying to find a partner for Al Michaels on “Thursday Night Football,” Troy Aikman and John Lynch were both targets. But Michaels preferred Cris Collinsworth, who he worked with at NBC.
He also reportedly wanted McVay in the booth with him, given their friendship.
Michaels – who had no previous relationship with Herbstreit before their Prime partnership – also preferred McVay. Despite their vast age differences, Michaels and McVay are friendly and dine together in Los Angeles. McVay, 40, has spoken publicly about an interest in calling games in the future.
The Rams just signed McVay and GM Les Snead to contract extensions this offseason, though they were only reported as “multi-year” deals, so the exact length wasn’t made public. It’s unclear how long McVay is signed for but he’s expressed no interest in leaving the coaching ranks right now – especially with an MVP quarterback in Matthew Stafford on the team.
But when he’s done coaching, there’s no doubt he’ll have his share of suitors in the broadcast world.
