The Los Angeles Rams can make the case for having the NFL’s best unit at multiple different positions, whether it’s their quarterback, wide receivers or defensive line. They’re loaded from top to bottom, something that’s been said countless times this offseason.
And earlier this week, the rich got richer when Aaron Donald announced his return to the NFL after two years on the sidelines, bolstering what was already viewed as one of the best defensive lines in football.
Steven Ruiz of FOX Sports ranked the 20 best position groups in the league and the Rams were predictably well-represented. They landed three units on the list, including the No. 1 spot.
The Rams’ offensive line earned the No. 16 spot thanks to their dominance last season in both pass
protection and the run game. They have the same five starters as they had last year, which only helps their chemistry and cohesiveness up front.
At No. 13, the Rams’ skill players checked in, the fifth-highest ranking among any team’s skill group. Led by Puka Nacua, Davante Adams and Kyren Williams, the Rams are not lacking weapons around Matthew Stafford. And as Ruiz notes, their tight end depth is exceptional, bringing back all four tight ends who had at least 200 yards receiving last season.
At the top of the list was the Rams’ defensive line, earning the No. 1 overall ranking. Ruiz wrote that the Rams may have been No. 1 before Donald came back, but now that he’s returned, there’s no question they will “be a nightmare to contend with.”
The Rams may have topped this list before Donald came out of retirement and ruined every offensive line coach’s weekend.
Even if Donald is a non-factor, there’s plenty of depth behind Garrett with Fiske, Turner and Ford clogging up interior run gaps on early downs, and Young providing more pass rush juice on third down. This unit will be a nightmare to contend with in any scenario.
The Rams are going to cause problems for their opponents on a weekly basis, and not just on one side of the ball or the other. They can win in multiple ways, be it through the air on offense or with a suffocating defense.
