The Los Angeles Rams wrapped up their eighth practice of training camp on Monday, concluding the second block of camp at LMU. There's one block remaining before the team heads back to its headquarters in Woodland Hills, continuing its prep for the start of the regular season.
There isn't much room for movement on the Rams' roster right now, especially atop the depth chart, but a few spots are still up for grabs. Here's our best projection of the 53-man roster after eight practices.
Quarterback (3)
- Matthew Stafford
- Stetson Bennett
- Ty Simpson
Bennett had the edge over Simpson coming into training camp and the gap might be even wider after eight practices. Bennett is clearly the favorite to back up Stafford, having performed well in camp. He's drawn rave reviews from Sean McVay and on Monday, Simpson didn't
even get any 11-on-11 reps because Stafford and Bennett took them all.
It's becoming more and more likely that the Rams will carry three quarterbacks initially.
Running back (4)
- Kyren Williams
- Blake Corum
- Ronnie Rivers
- Jarquez Hunter
Hunter and Rivers will battle for the RB3 spot and it's hard to discern who's leading that competition based on reports from camp. Either way, they should both make the team, especially with Rivers' ability to play special teams. Hunter has big-play ability that could earn him reps on offense this season after getting zero touches last year.
Wide receiver (6)
- Puka Nacua
- Davante Adams
- Jordan Whittington
- Konata Mumpfield
- Xavier Smith
- CJ Daniels
Daniels has impressed in camp, but probably not to the point where he'll unseat any of the receivers ahead of him. Whittington and Mumpfield have made their share of plays in practice, as has Smith, so their spots on the roster are more than likely safe. But six wideouts is a good starting number for the Rams heading into the season.
Mario Williams and Tyler Scott could be two sleepers to watch as camp rolls on.
Tight end (5)
- Colby Parkinson
- Tyler Higbee
- Terrance Ferguson
- Davis Allen
- Max Klare
Allen is dealing with a soft tissue injury in his quad, which will take "some time" to heal. He's considered week-to-week, according to McVay, which will give guys like Klare and the undrafted rookies more reps. Though the Rams won't rush Allen back, this injury probably isn't serious enough to land him on an injury list to start the season.
Offensive line (9)
- LT Alaric Jackson
- LG Steve Avila
- C Coleman Shelton
- RG Kevin Dotson
- RT Warren McClendon Jr.
- OT David Quessenberry
- G/C Beaux Limmer
- G/C Justin Dedich
- G/T Keagen Trost
Dedich has a hand injury suffered last month at home, which caused the Rams to put him on the NFI list. He should be fine for the start of the season but that's an injury to monitor, especially with Dylan McMahon also able to play center.
Defensive line (6)
- DT Kobie Turner
- NT Poona Ford
- DL Tyler Davis
- DE Braden Fiske
- NT Tim Keenan III
- DL Ty Hamilton
Signs seem to be pointing toward Aaron Donald coming back, which raises the question of whose roster spot he's going to take. It would make sense for him to take the spot of another defensive lineman, and that player could be Hamilton.
There's no question the top four are locked in, but there's room for movement with Keenan and Hamilton.
Outside linebacker (4)
- Myles Garrett
- Byron Young
- Josaiah Stewart
- Desjuan Johnson
Garret, Young and Stewart are all guaranteed to make the team. Three edge rushers aren't enough, though. That's why Johnson should also make the 53-man roster, especially after standing out toward the end of last season. It's not the deepest group, but when you have players like Garrett and Young, your starters are going to play most of the snaps anyway.
Inside linebacker (4)
- Nate Landman
- Omar Speights
- Shaun Dolac
- Grant Stuard
Landman and Speights have been the top two linebackers once again in camp, which isn't a surprise. Dolac could challenge for snaps sometime this season, as could Stuard, but they'll primarily be special teams players for Los Angeles – barring an injury.
Cornerback (5)
- Trent McDuffie
- Jaylen Watson
- Emmanuel Forbes Jr.
- Josh Wallace
- Cam Lampkin
Lampkin has been one of the bright spots of camp, making several nice plays in coverage. He's got quite the hill to climb when it comes to earning playing time, given the talent ahead of him, but don't be surprised if he makes the 53-man roster as the fifth corner. He nearly made it last season and has seemingly improved this offseason.
Safety (4)
- Quentin Lake
- Kam Curl
- Kamren Kinchens
- Jaylen McCollough
All four of these safeties will contribute in meaningful ways this season, giving the Rams an outstanding group on the back end. Lake covers the slot, Curl and Kinchens play interchangeably as deep and hook safeties, and McCollough is a great dime backer to have in sub-packages.
Special teams (3)
- K Harrison Mevis
- P Ethan Evans
- LS Joe Cardona
The Rams' special teamers are set for this season, barring a late change before Week 1.
