Vic Fangio's impact on professional football has stretched across nearly five decades. His influence (and scheme) has left his fingerprints all over the current landscape, and now the Philadelphia Eagles' defensive coordinator, one of the game's most respected defensive minds, has another honor to add to his remarkable resume.
Coach Fangio has been named the most recent recipient of the Pro Football Writers Association's Paul "Dr. Z" Zimmerman Award, a lifetime achievement honor recognizing outstanding work as an NFL assistant coach. It's another fitting milestone for a coach whose influence can be traced throughout multiple generations of NFL defense.

Fangio was spotted at a few Eagles practices during their 2022 training camp. On October 10th of that same year, news broke that the Eagles had hired him as a consultant. He signed a two-week-long contract to help with the Eagles' preparation for the Kansas City Chiefsahead of Super Bowl LVII.
Fangio would spend the 2023 season as the Miami Dolphins DC but returned to Philadelphia ahead of the 2024 season. He inherited a unit that ranked near the bottom of the league in several major categories. The turnaround was immediate. Under his guidance, the Eagles finished first in total defense and second in scoring defense.
That helped power the franchise to a victory in Super Bowl LIX. His defense overwhelmed Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, and the Chiefs' offense on the game's biggest stage. Fangio's defense was a catalyst, recording six sacks of Patrick Mahomes while forcing three turnovers.
Although the Eagles were unable to repeat as champions in 2025, Fangio's defense remained among the NFL's elite against the pass, allowing the league's lowest completion percentage, the fewest passing touchdowns and the second-lowest opposing passer rating.
Those accomplishments are only the latest chapter in a coaching career that began in 1979 and has included stops with several NFL organizations, as well as a three-year stint as head coach of the Denver Broncos.
Fangio was also named the AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year in 2018. The Zimmerman Award serves as recognition of far more than one outstanding season. It honors a career defined by innovation, consistency and a defensive philosophy that has influenced coaches across the NFL for decades. He has plenty to build on in 2026. He figures to remain in Philadelphia until he's ready to hang it up, and as his legendary career continues, he'll continue to build on an outstanding legacy.
