Jalen Hurts has embraced the Philadelphia Eagles’ transition to Sean Mannion’s offense, but the organization understands that the system’s real evaluation begins in the regular season. During a recent post-53-man roster media session, Dave Zangaro asked Howie Roseman how Hurts has adjusted to Philadelphia’s latest offensive changes.
“I think Jalen’s adjusted really well to the new offense,” Roseman said. “Now again, we’re at a moment in time. We haven’t played a game.”
Hurts and the Eagles’ starting offensive line did not play during the preseason. Philadelphia also protected its regular-season plans by operating with limited game plans during exhibition games against Baltimore, New England and Cincinnati. Roseman expects the finished product
to look substantially different from the preseason offense and from what Philadelphia ran last season.
“I think that a lot of the things that we’ll do during the regular season when we have game plans, I think from an offensive perspective, they’re going to be different than what we’ve done in the past,” Roseman said.
Mannion was promoted to offensive coordinator after serving as quarterbacks coach. His offense has emphasized precision, timing and rhythm while attempting to place Hurts and Philadelphia’s playmakers in more favorable situations. The changes were necessary. Roseman acknowledged that the Eagles did not score enough points or produce at an acceptable level last season.
“We’ve got to be better than we were last year,” Roseman said. “That was really how the offseason started, led by Coach Sirianni and saying where we were in points scored, where we were on offense wasn’t good enough.”
Hurts has embraced the changes. The next step is proving they work against Washington.
