The Eagles have changed course on Jalen Hurts
and decided to place the quarterback on injured reserve because of a superficial blood clot, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Saturday. The decision followed consultations with numerous doctors and experts that continued into Saturday, Schefter said. It follows earlier reports from Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport that Philadelphia did not plan to put Hurts on injured reserve. The move requires Hurts to miss at least four games, taking him out of Sunday’s matchup against Carolina and the three NFC East games that follow against Dallas, Washington, and the Giants.

Philadelphia has its bye in Week 10, meaning Hurts could not return to game action before Week 11. That is the earliest eligibility point, not an announced recovery timetable. Tanner McKee will start against the Panthers and is now preparing for a potentially extended assignment. The Eagles added Joe Milton III from the Cowboys’ practice squad Friday, joining McKee and Cole Payton in the quarterback room.
The Eagles initially ruled Hurts out Thursday after a follow-up ultrasound Wednesday night revealed movement in a small blood clot. An ultrasound in London had identified the superficial clot before Hurts played against Jacksonville last Sunday. Philadelphia said its medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the initial results and determined he could safely play. The follow-up findings led the Eagles to hold him out while they determined the right course of treatment.
Saturday’s report establishes a longer minimum absence but does not, by itself, establish a new diagnosis or specific treatment plan.
The Eagles enter Sunday’s game at 2-3 following three consecutive losses. They now face a four-game stretch before their bye without Hurts, leaving McKee to lead an offense that also lacks Saquon Barkley against Carolina.
