The Philadelphia Eagles will risk losing two of their most intriguing developmental prospects on the waiver wire.
Philadelphia waived defensive tackle Uar Bernard and outside linebacker Joshua Weru while completing its initial 53-man roster, according to Brooks Kubena of The Athletic. Bernard, a seventh-round pick, and Weru, an undrafted rookie, arrived in Philadelphia through unconventional paths. Both international prospects were playing organized football for the first time this summer, having begun their athletic careers in other sports.
The Eagles understood that neither player would be ready to make an immediate contribution. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio acknowledged during training camp that both had significant development ahead of
them, but their rare physical traits made them compelling long-term projects.

Bernard entered the NFL through the International Player Pathway program. The Nigerian defensive tackle attracted attention before the draft with his combination of size, speed and explosiveness despite having no organized football experience.
Weru, a former rugby player from Kenya, displayed similar raw potential. His speed and athleticism occasionally surfaced during preseason games, particularly when he attacked quarterbacks in space.
Neither player showed enough consistency to earn a position on a defensive front built to contend immediately.
Both will now be available to the rest of the league through waivers. If they are not claimed, Philadelphia can attempt to bring them back to the practice squad for further development. Bernard’s international-player designation could give the Eagles additional practice-squad flexibility. First, however, Philadelphia must hope another team does not decide that either player’s physical upside is worth a roster claim.
