There was a time when every conversation about the Philadelphia Eagles' pass rush centered on who they didn't have. Should they trade for a superstar? Would they pursue another expensive veteran? Could they survive without adding one more marquee edge rusher? This time around, Howie Roseman answered those questions differently.
Rather than chasing headlines, the Eagles quietly assembled one of the NFL's deeper edge rotations. Jonathan Greenard arrived via trade, giving Philadelphia another proven starter capable of making an immediate impact. Free-agent additions Arnold Ebiketie and A.J. Epenesa weren't splashy acquisitions, but both represent the type of low-risk, high-upside moves Roseman has built his reputation on.
Add former first-round pick
Nolan Smith, emerging pass rusher Jalyx Huntand rookie Keyshawn James-Newby, and suddenly the Eagles have no shortage of intriguing options. That's before mentioning Joshua Weru, the undrafted rookie whose athletic upside makes him a fascinating long-term developmental project despite his limited football experience.
The Eagles are betting on waves of pressure
Philadelphia's approach says a great deal about how the organization views pass rushing. The Eagles didn't need one player to replace Jaelan Phillips, but this might be a room capable of creating relentless pressure over four quarters.
But take that thought a tad further. They may have found an upgrade for Phillips anyway. If Greenard stays healthy, there's every reason to believe he could become an even better fit than Phillips was because of his versatility and experience within multiple defensive fronts.
That philosophy has become a hallmark of Roseman's roster construction. Rather than relying on one defender to produce 15 sacks (though finding one is always welcome), the Eagles have consistently prioritized building deep rotations that keep fresh legs on the field throughout a game and throughout the season.
There's still plenty to prove. Injuries could alter the outlook, and several newcomers must earn meaningful roles once training camp begins. On paper, however, the Eagles appear to have quietly built a pass-rushing group with far more depth than many outside Philadelphia realize.
If the pieces come together, Roseman may have done it again. Instead of winning the offseason with one blockbuster move, he may have assembled another defensive front capable of overwhelming opponents through numbers, versatility, and constant pressure.
