Jalen Hurts left the Philadelphia Eagles with a direct question following their 27-7 loss to the Chicago Bears.
“Who are we?”
The answer will not come from a speech or one productive week of practice. Philadelphia must provide it through its response after being outplayed, outcoached, and out-executed during its first loss of the season. During his weekly press conference at the Jefferson Health Training Complex, Hurts said Wednesday that he challenged each player to consider the question as they determine how the Eagles will move forward.
“That’s a choice you can make,” Hurts said. “Being deliberate and intentional in how we move forward so we can continue to improve.”
The Eagles remain 2-1 after defeating the Washington Commanders and Tennessee
Titans. Those victories demonstrated resilience, but they also concealed problems that became impossible to ignore in Chicago.
Philadelphia committed 10 penalties, turned the ball over, and failed to force a takeaway. Its offense generated only seven points, while its defense allowed a 38-year-old backup quarterback to operate comfortably. Hurts is not interested in the Eagles establishing an identity based on style points. He wants their defining characteristic to be winning, regardless of how they secure those victories.
“I don’t really care how we look,” Hurts said. “I don’t care who we are. I want to be winners. I want to win, and that’s always going to take precedence over anything.”
Philadelphia is still developing continuity within Sean Mannion’s offense. Hurts acknowledged that players can hesitate when processing new information, which can keep the unit from operating instinctively. He also understands that the schedule will not pause while the Eagles search for answers.
“No one’s going to wait on us,” Hurts said. “There’s a sense of urgency for us to just continue to improve.”
That urgency increases with the Los Angeles Rams visiting Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday. The Eagles have six days to correct their mistakes, refine their offense, and restore the discipline they lacked against Chicago.
Hurts asked the question. The Eagles’ performance against the Rams will begin supplying the answer.
