Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley will undergo additional testing after leaving Sunday’s 24-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams with a hamstring injury. Barkley suffered the injury on his second carry
with 11:34 remaining in the first quarter. He gained six yards before pulling up near the sideline and grabbing the back of his right leg. Barkley entered the medical tent, went to the locker room, and was eventually ruled out.He finished with eight yards on two carries and added a 2-yard reception on his only target. Barkley has rushed for 182 yards without a touchdown through four games this season.
The early outlook offers some reason for optimism. NFL Network reported that the injury is not believed to be overly serious, while NBC
Sports Philadelphia observed Barkley walking normally as he left the stadium. Testing should determine the strain's location and severity.
What could the tests reveal?
The best-case outcome would be a mild Grade 1 strain with limited structural damage. That could leave Barkley day-to-day, with practice participation as the determining factor for Week 5. A Grade 2 diagnosis would indicate a partial muscle tear and likely create a multiweek absence. A Grade 3 injury would represent a complete tear and a significantly longer recovery, although the early optimism and Barkley’s ability to walk normally make that scenario appear less likely. MedlinePlus notes that recovery can range from a few days for a mild strain to several weeks or longer for a more substantial tear.
Philadelphia travels to London to face Jacksonville in Week 5. If Barkley cannot play, Tank Bigsby would be positioned for an expanded workload after recording 55 yards on 14 carries against Los Angeles. The Eagles’ first official practice report will provide the next meaningful indication of Barkley’s availability. Until the test results are known, his Week 5 status remains uncertain.
