The quarterback explained that his point was not that he intended to control every part of the scheme. Hurts was describing the responsibility that came with being the one constant amid repeated changes at offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, and play-caller. That context matters when pundits attempt to hurl insults or criticism. Hurts has
operated under several offensive coordinators since Philadelphia selected him in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. Each change has required him to learn new terminology, adjust his footwork and adapt to another coach’s vision.
Hurts acknowledged that he could understand why the original statement was interpreted literally. He did not withdraw it. Instead, he explained that his stability in an unstable environment made him responsible for keeping everything working. The 2026 season will provide another test. Sean Mannion has installed a system expected to differ from the offense Philadelphia used last year. Hurts has embraced the transition, according to general manager Howie Roseman.
The quarterback’s influence should be viewed as an asset if it produces collaboration, consistency and solutions. It becomes a concern only if Philadelphia cannot evolve.
