The Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly exploring ways to improve their offensive line ahead of the NFL trade deadline, and one of the league's most accomplished guards drew their interest.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Philadelphia was among several teams that expressed varying levels of interest in Indianapolis Colts guard Quenton Nelson before the veteran was traded to the Seattle Seahawks. The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears also pursued Nelson, though Fowler did not say whether the Eagles submitted a formal offer or how far discussions progressed.
Nelson, 30, has been one of the NFL's premier interior offensive linemen since Indianapolis selected him with the sixth overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft. The former Notre Dame standout
has earned eight consecutive Pro Bowl selections, establishing himself as a cornerstone of the Colts' offensive line and one of the league's most recognizable players at his position.

Philadelphia's reported interest comes at a difficult point in the season, with the Eagles sitting at 2-5 following Monday night's 38-21 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The defeat extended their losing streak to five games, and injuries, inconsistent offensive production, and offensive line changes have added challenges for head coach Nick Sirianni and offensive coordinator Sean Mannion.
Eagles continue evaluating offensive line upgrades.
Philadelphia's offensive line has changed significantly since the offseason, most notably after Lane Johnson's retirement. The Eagles have also dealt with injuries to Landon Dickerson and other key contributors, forcing offensive line coach Chris Kuper to make adjustments while attempting to establish continuity.
The Eagles started Jordan Mailata, Dickerson, Drew Kendall, Tyler Steen and Markel Bell against Dallas, with all five playing every offensive snap. The group helped Philadelphia rush for 121 yards, but the offense struggled to sustain production after taking a 21-20 third-quarter lead. Quarterback Tanner McKee was sacked twice, and the Eagles went 15 minutes without scoring.
Nelson would have represented a significant addition to an interior offensive line that already features Dickerson and Steen. Although Nelson spent most of his career at left guard, his experience, physicality, and ability to create running lanes would have given Philadelphia another accomplished blocker as the team tries to stabilize its offense.
The potential fit would have required some adjustments, particularly with Dickerson established at left guard and Steen handling the right side. However, the Eagles' willingness to explore the market for a player of Nelson's caliber suggests general manager Howie Roseman is still evaluating upgrades despite the team's disappointing record.
Quenton Nelson's trade market included several NFC contenders
Nelson's availability reportedly drew significant interest league-wide, with Seattle ultimately emerging as his destination. The Seahawks acquired a proven interior blocker while Philadelphia, Green Bay, and Chicago were left to consider other potential options.
The veteran signed a four-year, $80 million contract extension with Indianapolis in 2022, and any interested team would have had to consider his financial situation. Acquiring Nelson would have required Philadelphia to weigh the potential immediate improvement against the cost of surrendering draft capital and potentially negotiating another contract.
Those considerations matter even more for an Eagles franchise already carrying substantial financial commitments to several foundational players. Philadelphia has invested heavily in its offensive and defensive lines, and the team must continue balancing its desire to compete immediately with the need to maintain financial flexibility in future seasons.
The Eagles also have to account for their uncertain quarterback situation. Jalen Hurts is out for the remainder of the season because of blood clots, leaving McKee as the starter while Joe Milton provides another developmental option. Improving the offensive line would give Philadelphia a better opportunity to protect its quarterbacks, establish the running game, and create more favorable situations for an offense missing several established playmakers.
What Nelson's reported interest means for the Eagles
Philadelphia's involvement in Nelson's market suggests Roseman remains willing to pursue significant roster upgrades, even as the Eagles continue losing ground in the NFC playoff race. The organization has consistently prioritized offensive line play, and the reported interest in Nelson aligns with that philosophy.
However, the Eagles face a difficult decision as the trade deadline approaches. At 2-5, Philadelphia must decide whether to acquire established veterans or preserve draft capital as it evaluates long-term needs. The Eagles currently hold the projected No. 6 overall selection in the 2027 NFL draft, underscoring how quickly their season has changed.
Philadelphia still has several talented offensive linemen under contract, but injuries and personnel changes have shown the importance of reliable depth. With Johnson retired and questions about the unit's long-term construction, Roseman could continue exploring potential additions before the deadline.
Nelson is no longer an option after Seattle's move, and Philadelphia was not close to acquiring him. Still, the reported interest offers insight into the Eagles' thinking as they attempt to address weaknesses along an offensive line that has traditionally been one of the franchise's greatest strengths.
Eagles face difficult trade deadline decisions.
The reported interest in Nelson also raises questions about Philadelphia's approach to the Nov. 10 trade deadline. The Eagles entered the season expected to compete for another NFC East title. Still, five straight losses have left Roseman facing a tough decision about how aggressively to pursue veteran talent.
Acquiring an established player like Nelson would be a significant investment for a team outside the playoff picture. Philadelphia must weigh improving its roster immediately against the value of retaining premium draft selections, especially with the Eagles positioned to hold a top-10 pick in the 2027 NFL draft.
The offensive line remains a priority regardless of how the Eagles approach the remainder of the season. Mailata and Steen provide established options, while Dickerson's health and the long-term outlook at right tackle remain important considerations. The Eagles must also decide whether their younger linemen can develop into dependable starters or whether they need additional outside investments.
Philadelphia missed a chance to acquire Nelson, but the reported interest suggests Roseman is still exploring upgrades rather than abandoning efforts to improve the team. With the trade deadline approaching and the Eagles preparing for another critical NFC East matchup against Washington, the organization must decide whether to use its remaining resources to salvage the 2026 season or strengthen the roster for 2027 and beyond.
