The Philadelphia Eagles entered Monday night desperate for a win, and for two offensive possessions, Sean Mannion's group looked capable of delivering. Unfortunately for Nick Sirianni, the same defensive issues that have plagued Philadelphia throughout its three-game losing streak resurfaced against a Dallas Cowboys offense that had little trouble moving the football.
The Eagles trail Dallas 20-14 at halftime after allowing 275 total yards and two touchdown passes from Dak Prescott. Philadelphia scored touchdowns on its first two possessions, but Tanner McKee and the offense failed to sustain that momentum.
Dallas controlled the ball for 17:14, while Prescott completed 12 of 21 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns. The Cowboys also rushed for 101
yards on 18 attempts.
Here are five takeaways from the first half.
1. Saquon Barkley provides an immediate spark, but his health remains a concern
Philadelphia's offense looked completely different with Barkley back in the lineup.
The All-Pro running back accounted for 49 yards from scrimmage on the Eagles' opening possession, including a 29-yard run and an 8-yard touchdown that gave Philadelphia a 7-3 lead. Barkley finished the half with 50 yards on six carries, averaging 8.3 yards per attempt, while adding two receptions for nine yards. His return immediately boosted a rushing attack that had managed just 57 yards over the previous two games combined.
However, Barkley appeared bothered by his hamstring throughout the half. He spent time stretching on the sideline, had multiple stretches without entering the game, and eventually received attention in the medical tent.
Philadelphia needs his explosiveness, but his availability and workload will be worth monitoring throughout the second half.
2. Sean Mannion's offense finally shows creativity and balance
The Eagles entered Monday night having struggled to establish an offensive identity under first-year coordinator Sean Mannion.
That changed immediately against Dallas.
Philadelphia opened with a four-play, 75-yard touchdown drive before putting together a 13-play, 76-yard possession capped by Dameon Pierce's 5-yard touchdown run. It was the first time this season the Eagles scored touchdowns on their opening two possessions. Mannion incorporated movement, varied formations, and a more effective rushing attack, while Landon Dickerson's return boosted the offensive line.
The Eagles finished the first quarter with 124 yards, nine first downs and 10 points, their best opening-quarter production of the season. The problem was sustaining that success. Philadelphia gained just 20 yards on its final two possessions before halftime, giving Dallas opportunities to extend its lead.
3. Eagles defensive front continues to struggle against the run
Dallas made its intentions clear from the opening possession.
The Cowboys repeatedly attacked Philadelphia's defensive front with Javonte Williams and Tyler Goodson, creating manageable down-and-distance situations and keeping Prescott out of obvious passing situations.
Williams rushed for 67 yards on 10 carries, while Goodson added 26 yards on six attempts.
Dallas finished the half with 101 rushing yards, averaging 5.6 yards per attempt.
That production let the Cowboys control possession and sustain drives, including a 14-play, 81-yard touchdown march that chewed up 7:48.
Philadelphia's defense has enough individual talent to create disruption, but the front seven must better control the line of scrimmage if the Eagles expect to climb back into the game.
4. Cowboys receivers continue to expose Philadelphia's secondary
The Eagles have struggled to defend opposing receivers in critical situations, and Dallas took advantage with two of the league's most dangerous playmakers. Prescott found CeeDee Lamb for a touchdown against Cooper DeJean in the first quarter, then connected with George Pickens for a spectacular 21-yard score against Andrew Mukuba in the second.
Next Gen Stats say Pickens' touchdown had a completion probability of just 14.9%, the most improbable reception of his career. Lamb finished the half with four catches for 58 yards and a touchdown, while Pickens added three receptions for 51 yards and a score. The bigger concern was Philadelphia's inability to pressure Prescott.
The Cowboys quarterback wasn't sacked in the first half, giving him time to attack individual matchups and extend drives. Vic Fangio must find a way to generate pressure without repeatedly leaving his defensive backs in unfavorable coverage situations.
5. Tanner McKee must improve his accuracy with the game within reach
McKee had opportunities to keep Philadelphia's offense rolling after the Eagles scored touchdowns on their opening two drives.
Instead, the offense stalled.
The Eagles quarterback completed 7 of 13 passes for 68 yards in the first half, and his most costly mistakes came late in the second quarter. With Philadelphia trailing 17-14 and starting a possession near midfield, McKee missed Darius Cooper and Makai Lemon on consecutive throws despite both receivers creating opportunities. The Eagles punted after a three-and-out that lasted just 25 seconds, giving Prescott another chance to score before halftime.
Dallas capitalized, putting together an eight-play, 78-yard drive that ended with Aubrey's second field goal.
McKee has shown flashes of competence within Mannion's offense, but Philadelphia needs more consistent accuracy and better execution in obvious passing situations.
With Barkley's workload uncertain and the Eagles' defense struggling, the quarterback cannot afford to waste promising field position.
Second-half outlook
Philadelphia will get the opening kickoff of the third quarter and a chance to take the lead.
The Eagles have already shown they can move the ball against Dallas, especially when the running game is involved. Pierce has added 36 yards and a touchdown on seven carries, giving Mannion another option if Barkley's workload remains limited.
But the Eagles cannot rely solely on offensive improvement.
Philadelphia allowed 20 points and 275 yards in the first half, and the Cowboys have established advantages in the running game, time of possession, and explosive passing plays. The Eagles must generate pressure on Prescott, improve their tackling, and find ways to keep Lamb and Pickens from controlling the game.
For a Philadelphia team entering the night at 2-4, the second half offers a chance to avoid a fourth straight loss and another damaging setback in the NFC East race.
