The Philadelphia Eagles are dealing with significant injuries entering Sunday night's matchup against the Washington Commanders, but those absences could create important opportunities for several young players and reserves.
With DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks, and Jihaad Campbell ruled out, Philadelphia will need more from players like Makai Lemon, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., and Hollywood Brown as the Eagles try to end a five-game losing streak.
Philadelphia returns to the national spotlight against the Washington Commanders on Sunday Night Football. Those memorable performances are difficult to replicate, but prime-time games have a way of introducing players to audiences who might not otherwise know their names. Here are five Eagles who could use
Sunday's opportunity to make an impression well beyond Philadelphia.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Few Eagles have seen their stock fluctuate as much as Jihaad Campbell. Expectations were high, and some supporters have wanted to see more. Still, he has accumulated 49 tackles, one sack, and a forced fumble through six games, but he'll miss Sunday night due to injury.
Trotter, meanwhile, continues to build his following and has a chance to create some separation. He has recorded 30 tackles and a half-sack, providing an energetic presence whenever his number is called. Both linebackers have opportunities to make an impression against Washington. A big night from Campbell could quiet some of his critics, while another strong showing from Trotter could further strengthen his case for a larger role.
Hollywood Brown, wide receiver
There was considerable curiosity surrounding Hollywood Brown when Philadelphia signed him to a one-year contract in March. The speed and experience were attractive, but his opportunities have been limited. Through two appearances, he has just two receptions for 30 yards.
That isn't exactly what people envisioned when the Eagles brought him aboard. With other receivers dealing with injuries, Brown could have an opportunity to become more involved in the passing game. A few explosive plays Sunday night would be a welcome development and could change the conversation surrounding his place in the offense.
The Eagles have enjoyed some unforgettable prime-time performances over the years, but those moments don't always come from the players everyone expects. Sunday offers another opportunity for someone to step out of the shadows, make a statement, and give Philadelphia fans a new name to remember.
Jalyx Hunt, EDGE
Last season, Jalyx Hunt led the Eagles in both sacks (6.5) and interceptions (three). Through six games this season, however, he has yet to record a stat in either category. His production has been quieter, but that doesn't mean his impact has disappeared.
Hunt has already demonstrated an ability to make plays in multiple phases of the defense. A strong showing against Washington could remind casual viewers why Philadelphia has invested in his development and give him some much-needed momentum heading into the second half of the season.
Elijah Mitchell, running back
Most Eagles fans know Elijah Mitchell's name, but casual viewers might not be as familiar with him. The running back returned to Philadelphia's practice squad this month and made his first game appearance of the season against the Dallas Cowboys, carrying three times for 11 yards and catching three passes for another 23.
Saquon Barkley returned to practice on Friday, and it appears he will play on Sunday, but he's dealing with hamstring and back issues. The rest of the backfield is short on healthy options. Mitchell could receive another practice-squad elevation and see a healthy workload, since Barkley isn't 100 percent healthy.
Whether Mitchell plays (and whether he gets two touches or 20), he'll need to make them count. A productive performance could earn him more opportunities in Philadelphia, while also reminding the rest of the league that he still has something to offer.
