The Philadelphia Eagles will begin training camp without one of their most important offseason additions, but the early prognosis is encouraging.
Edge rusher Jonathan Greenard will be placed on the active physically unable to perform list after suffering a pectoral strain while lifting weights before camp. The injury is not considered a long-term concern, although Greenard will miss the beginning of Philadelphia’s on-field work.
The active/PUP designation means Greenard can attend meetings and participate in rehabilitation work but cannot practice. He can be removed from the list and return to the field at any point after receiving medical clearance.

Philadelphia acquired
Greenard from the Minnesota Vikings during the 2026 NFL draft, sending two third-round picks to Minnesota before agreeing to a new contract reportedly worth $84 million. The Eagles expect him to provide an established presence within a pass-rush rotation that also includes Jalyx Hunt, Nolan Smith, Arnold Ebiketie and A.J. Epenesa.
Greenard recorded only three sacks during an injury-shortened 2025 season that ended with shoulder surgery. He produced 24½ sacks across the previous two seasons, establishing himself as one of the NFL’s more productive edge defenders. The pectoral strain is unrelated to the shoulder injury that ended his final season in Minnesota. Philadelphia’s cautious approach is understandable because of Greenard’s projected role and the investment required to acquire him.
His absence should create additional early practice repetitions for Hunt, Smith, Ebiketie, Epenesa and the other edge defenders competing for rotational roles. It will also delay Greenard’s opportunity to develop timing within Vic Fangio’s defense.
There is no indication Greenard’s availability for the regular season is in danger. The Eagles can afford to prioritize his recovery rather than rush him into July practices.
Philadelphia needs Greenard healthy for meaningful games, not the opening days of training camp. His progress will nevertheless become an important storyline until he receives clearance to return.
