Zack Baun’s dominant performance in the Philadelphia Eagles’ season-opening victory earned him recognition from the NFL. Baun was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week after recording a team-high 12 tackles, one tackle for loss, and two passes defensed during Philadelphia’s 24-22 victory over the Washington Commanders.
The Eagles linebacker was equally effective in coverage.
Washington targeted Baun six times, completing three passes for minus-2 yards. His ability to close quickly on underneath routes prevented the Commanders from generating yards after the catch and helped Philadelphia contain Jayden Daniels for most of the afternoon. This is the second honor of Baun’s career. He was previously named NFC Defensive Player of the Week following
Philadelphia’s Week 10 victory during the 2024 season.
Baun played all 70 defensive snaps against Washington and provided stability while several younger defenders adjusted to expanded roles. He was particularly effective against the run, recording four defensive stops and consistently arriving around the football. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio praised Baun’s overall performance and linked his strong start to a healthy offseason. Baun participated throughout training camp this year after a back injury limited his preparation before the 2025 season.
Philadelphia’s defense struggled during Washington’s final two possessions, but Baun remained one of its most consistent performers. His range, awareness, and coverage ability let Fangio use him in several assignments without taking him off the field.
Baun will attempt to build on that performance Sunday when the Eagles travel to face Cam Ward and the Tennessee Titans.
