The Philadelphia Eagles have released veteran cornerback Ambry Thomas while continuing to reduce their roster, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Thomas originally joined Philadelphia’s practice squad in August 2025. The Eagles
released him in January before bringing him back on a reserve-future contract later that month, giving the veteran an opportunity to compete for a depth role during the offseason.The San Francisco 49ers selected Thomas with the No. 102 overall pick in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft. He appeared in 42 regular-season games with 11 starts during three seasons in San Francisco, recording 79 tackles, 11 passes defensed and two interceptions.
Thomas produced some encouraging moments during Philadelphia’s preseason, including
a fumble recovery against Baltimore and two passes defensed. He also surrendered several explosive completions and committed costly penalties while competing against Shaun Wade, Isaiah Bolden, Jakorian Bennett and other reserve cornerbacks.
His departure provides more clarity behind Quinyon Mitchell, Riq Woolen, Cooper DeJean, Jonathan Jones, Kelee Ringo and Mac McWilliams. It could also strengthen the roster cases for Wade and Bolden, although Philadelphia has additional decisions to make throughout the secondary.
The Eagles evaluated Thomas through their entire three-game preseason schedule, but his experience was not enough to overcome an uneven summer and significant competition.
Because Thomas is a vested veteran, he immediately becomes a free agent and can sign with another team. His starting experience, postseason background, and familiarity with multiple defensive systems should give him an opportunity to find work elsewhere.
