Quarterback grades are rarely straightforward, particularly when the supporting cast struggles to provide consistent help. That challenge was evident when Tanner McKee made his first start for the Philadelphia Eagles in place of Jalen Hurts. McKee delivered a well-placed touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith and helped engineer two scoring drives, but the Eagles needed more consistent passing production. His first start of the season ended in a 25-14 loss to Carolina, with encouraging individual throws offset by a 57.8% completion rate and just 4.8 yards per attempt.
McKee showed flashes against the Carolina Panthers, including a well-placed touchdown pass and several important third-down conversions. However, Philadelphia struggled to sustain drives,
and another loss overshadowed a decent individual performance.
McKee had some encouraging moments under pressure, but the offense couldn't string together enough successful plays to build momentum. His outing wasn't spectacular, but it gave us enough to evaluate his performance beyond the final score. Here's how McKee graded out in Week 6.
Tanner McKee's best throws
McKee's best moment came early in the fourth quarter, when he connected with DeVonta Smith for a 19-yard touchdown. With a defender tight in coverage, McKee delivered a perfectly placed fade into the end zone, giving Smith the chance to catch it and bringing Philadelphia within five points after Jake Elliott's extra point.

The throw required precision, and McKee supplied it. His connection with Smith wasn't new, either; the two had built chemistry in the Eagles' regular-season finale last year. Smith finished Sunday with seven receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown.
McKee also made a couple of important throws during a 10-play, 78-yard touchdown drive in the second quarter. On second-and-six, he evaded a free rusher before finding Dallas Goedert for a 15-yard gain. Four plays later, he located Smith on third-and-seven for another 16 yards.
Those completions helped Philadelphia move the chains when the offense needed answers. They also showed McKee could recognize pressure and deliver into tight windows, even if that execution wasn't consistent all afternoon.
Tanner McKee's Week 6 final report card
Accuracy and ball location: C
McKee showed that he could deliver accurate passes when his timing and mechanics were right. There were also teaching moments. Philadelphia's opening drive nearly went sideways before the offense could settle in.
After an 11-yard sack on the first play, an errant pass intended for Makai Lemon followed. That one caromed off the rookie and nearly got intercepted. One could also argue that Lemon eased up a bit while McKee expected him to be a half-step ahead. Either way, by day's end, McKee had completed 57.8% of his attempts while averaging just 4.8 yards per pass.
Vision and dissection: C
McKee found some openings against Carolina. He also showed some ability to work through pressure and identify receivers who could help move the chains. The problem was that those moments didn't translate into consistent offensive production.
McKee struggled to generate enough downfield success to keep Carolina off the board, and the Panthers led from start to finish. The Eagles repeatedly found themselves in difficult situations. The offensive scheme and protection deserve some blame, but McKee needed to recognize opportunities to create more manageable third downs and sustain drives.
Intangibles and off-script plays: B-
No one expected to see the second coming of Michael Vick, but to his credit, McKee moved well enough, mostly sliding around the pocket in a few instances to buy time. The offense gained all 35 rushing yards through running back Dameon Pierce.
McKee deserves credit for remaining composed in a difficult situation. He avoided game-altering mistakes, stood in the pocket to make throws, and delivered several passes despite pressure. He didn't look overwhelmed by the moment, even though some of his teammates seemed to be at times.
Decision-making: C
McKee's decision-making wasn't disastrous, but it wasn't clean enough to be seen as superior. A 'B' to 'C' range seems fair. The volume of incompletions (19 on 45 attempts) leaves a little to be desired. He'll need to make better decisions with the football and recognize opportunities to limit negative plays as he gets more starts.
On the positive side, he finished without an interception. He also didn't turn the bad snap into a lost possession. He recovered the ball after Jake Majors' errant exchange, preventing an already costly mistake from becoming even worse.
Leadership: B-
McKee showed resilience while operating behind a struggling offensive line and without a dependable running game. He continued looking for opportunities to move the ball and helped produce two touchdown drives. One briefly brought Philadelphia within five points.
McKee entered Week 6 with limited opportunities to work with the starting offense, and he was suddenly responsible for leading a team that had already lost three consecutive games. The Eagles fell 25-14, extending their losing streak to four, but the result didn't reflect the quarterback's performance alone.
Overall grade: C
McKee's first start was neither a breakthrough nor a failure. He demonstrated the arm talent to make difficult throws and showed enough composure to handle the assignment, but his overall production fell short of what Philadelphia needed.
With the Eagles losing 25-14 to extend their skid to four games, the larger question is whether McKee can improve the offense's efficiency as he gets more preparation with the starters. His performance against Carolina provides a starting point, not a definitive answer about his ceiling.
The upcoming matchup with the Dallas Cowboys will give McKee another opportunity to build on Sunday's positives. Better accuracy, more productive throws downfield, and improved consistency on early downs would do more to strengthen his case than another isolated highlight.
