The Philadelphia Eagles are releasing veteran quarterback Andy Dalton, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, leaving Tanner McKee and Cole Payton as Jalen Hurts' backups. Garafolo reported Friday that Philadelphia is moving on from Dalton, changing the quarterback room as the Eagles prepare to face the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.
Dalton opened the season as Philadelphia’s No. 2 quarterback and played during the Week 3 loss to Chicago while Hurts underwent a concussion evaluation. Hurts was cleared to return, but Dalton threw an interception in the end zone during his relief appearance. The move gives McKee an opportunity to take over the primary backup role while keeping Payton in Philadelphia’s quarterback plans. Garafolo’s report did
not specify their depth-chart order.
Philadelphia enters Sunday’s matchup at 2-2 after consecutive losses to the Bears and Rams. With injuries already forcing changes throughout the offense, the Eagles are now making another personnel decision at quarterback.
Hurts remains the starter, but Philadelphia will move forward with McKee and Payton providing the insurance behind him.
