The easiest way to evaluate a Philadelphia Eagles rookie receiver is to look at the numbers. Naturally, everyone gravitates to receptions, targets, touchdowns, and explosive plays.
Right now, those measurements tell us very little about Makai Lemon. He's been working his way back from a hamstring injury. He sat out more practice sessions than he participated in.
There's been no game action from the Eagles' 2026 first-round draft choice. He took a lot of mental reps during two joint practices. Naturally, his absence shifted attention more toward what he hasn't done than toward what he has. What he has done, however, may be the more interesting story. His coaches aren't panicking, and since he has returned to practice, he seems on track for a Week
1 start.
The Eagles keep treating Makai Lemon like a player with a major role ahead
While much of the conversation surrounding Lemon has focused on missed practice time and delayed development, the Eagles' actions suggest they remain fully invested in preparing him for a significant role. In some ways, their usage of him may reveal more than any preseason stat line ever could.
When offensive coordinator Sean Mannion was asked about Lemon's progress this week, he didn't focus on catches or highlight plays. Instead, he praised the rookie's approach during his recovery.
"He's been really, really engaged mentally. I think that's the challenge: any player that you're injured, you lose those physical reps, but he's done a really nice job... He's been locked in in all the walkthrough settings. Even when he can't get the rep, he's kind of shadowing his position on the field and staying super engaged. And he's been working his way back. I know he's looked good, and hopefully we'll see him out here in a minute."
Those comments offer a glimpse into how Philadelphia views Lemon's development. The Eagles never appeared interested in putting his education on hold simply because he wasn't practicing. Instead, they continued to feed him information, responsibilities, and mental repetition. That approach matters because Lemon's projected role appears to involve much more than simply lining up in one spot and running a limited route tree.
The Eagles may be developing a versatile weapon.
Throughout training camp, and particularly after the recent Eagles joint practice, observers have noted Philadelphia moving Lemon around the formation. He has lined up in different locations, worked through various assignments, and even found himself matched against defenders such as Nolan Smith during practice periods.
Let's hope the goal isn't to regularly block Nolan Smith in practice. Even still, it appears the greater mission is less about finding one place for Smith and more about discovering all the places he can help. That's why Lemon's return to practice was so noteworthy.
Rather than slowly reintroducing him at the bottom of the depth chart, the Eagles immediately gave him work with the first-team offense. He later stayed after practice for additional work with Mannion, another sign that the coaching staff is accelerating his development rather than easing away from expectations.
It's easy to forget that Lemon wasn't drafted to be a developmental project. Philadelphia selected him in the first round because of his ability to create mismatches. At 5-foot-11 and 192 pounds, he profiles as a natural slot receiver, but his usage this summer suggests the Eagles may envision something broader.
The statistics will come when they come. Right now, the more important clue may be how the Eagles continue treating him. They aren't behaving like a team waiting for a rookie to catch up. They're behaving like a team preparing a talented young player for a meaningful role once the regular season arrives.
For Lemon, that may be the most encouraging development of all. The preseason box score remains mostly empty, but the Eagles' plans for him appear anything but small.
