Dallas is Philadelphia’s closest challenger, with 9.2 projected victories, a 48.5% playoff probability, and a 29.4% chance of winning the division. Washington and New York are projected to finish below .500. The model’s confidence in Philadelphia begins with Vic Fangio’s defense. The Eagles
have established stars at every level, including Jalen Carter, Zack Baun, Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean and Jalyx Hunt.
The biggest question exists on the other side of the football.
In a recent conversation, Mock explained why Philadelphia’s defense provides such a high floor and how first-year offensive coordinator Sean Mannion could determine whether the Eagles make another deep postseason run.
What is the Eagles’ greatest strength?
Your NFC East projections place the Eagles and Cowboys well ahead of Washington. What does the model see as Philadelphia’s greatest strength and its biggest source of uncertainty?
“The Eagles’ greatest strength is their defense, and I don’t think there is much argument there. They have talent at all three levels, and it’s top-tier talent, too. Vic Fangio is a great defensive coordinator, and I’d be shocked if they’re not a top-10 defense this year if they stay healthy.”
Fangio enters his third season as Philadelphia’s defensive coordinator, providing continuity as several young players move into larger roles. Mitchell and DeJean have already developed into two of the NFL’s best young cornerbacks. Baun remains the signal-caller at linebacker, while Jihaad Campbell gives Fangio another athletic and versatile option in the middle of the defense. Jalen Carter anchors the defensive line, and the Eagles have reinforced their pass rush with Jonathan Greenard, Arnold Ebiketie and A.J. Epenesa. That group joins Hunt and Nolan Smith Jr. on a defense built to pressure quarterbacks without sacrificing coverage flexibility.
The talent explains why Mock considers Philadelphia’s defense its most dependable asset entering the season.
Why is Sean Mannion the biggest uncertainty?
Mock does not identify Jalen Hurts as Philadelphia’s primary concern. The uncertainty surrounds the first-year coordinator designing the offense and calling plays.
“The uncertainty definitely comes on the offensive side of the ball,” Mock said. “While I won’t say Jalen Hurts is the source of that uncertainty, I’ll say it’s new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion.
“We have seen Hurts lead this offense to two Super Bowl appearances with offensive coordinators who ended up becoming head coaches. We have also seen the offensive efficiency drop when he’s had offensive coordinators who were relieved of their duties after one season.
“Mannion doesn’t have any experience, so he’s an unknown. Where he lands on that spectrum could ultimately determine whether the Eagles make another postseason run.”
Mannion has never called plays during an NFL regular-season game. His transition will be among Philadelphia’s most important storylines throughout the opening weeks. The Eagles have enough talent to ease that adjustment. Hurts is surrounded by Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith, Dallas Goedert and an offensive line led by Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson. Philadelphia does not need Mannion to completely reinvent the offense. It needs him to create answers when opponents limit the running game, place Hurts in advantageous situations, and consistently maximize one of the league’s deepest collections of talent.
NFC East projections
The Eagles hold a significant advantage over their division rivals, but their projected win total reflects the uncertainty that accompanies another offensive transition. Philadelphia’s defense should keep it in championship contention. Whether the Eagles reach their ceiling could depend on how quickly Mannion and Hurts establish an effective partnership.
